Seeing the light

The East Building Mall at Lake Washington Institute of Technology hosts frequent student events, but users consistently described the space as dim, especially during activities involving forms or reading. Rather than take that complaint at face value, SV measured actual light levels with a light meter and found they were technically adequate. The real issue wasn't quantity of light, but character. A space meant to feel bright, engaging, and full of life instead read as flat and impersonal.

SV responded by addressing the space's overall identity, not just its fixtures, developing mood boards spanning lighting, furniture, and finishes to help students define the "vibe" they wanted, both for this project and for future work in the same space. The selected direction, warm eclectic, blends the Mall's existing concrete and industrial character with soft, simple-geometry fixtures at varying heights, warm natural materials, and balanced color, creating dimension and warmth. SV also identified which elements of the boards translate into reusable design language Associated Student Government can carry into future projects.

Despite this broader guidance, the current project scope remains focused on new fixtures as a first step toward that larger vision.
