Keeping things running

Lake Washington Institute of Technology's server room cooling unit was failing, and the budget for replacement was tight. A recent refrigerant code change ruled out a like-for-like swap, and meeting the new code-required capacity would have meant a new mechanical shaft which would have been costly and disruptive, as well as beyond the original scope. SV recommended splitting the load into two smaller units instead, reusing the existing refrigerant line path and avoiding new shaft work altogether, keeping the project on budget and fully code-compliant. The split also delivered cooling redundancy: either unit can now be serviced or replaced without taking the server room offline.
