Using what is available efficiently

Washington Network for Innovative Careers (WaNIC), as a tenant of Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWIT), had identified a 2nd floor suite, once built for nursing observation training, since used as miscellaneous storage, as space to relocate its growing Fire & EMS program, which was outgrowing its 3rd floor home. SV's task was to find the most effective way to use that space, not simply fill it.

SV tested every viable way to reconfigure the suite rather than proposing a single answer, developing three distinct layouts, each balancing capacity, cost, and flexibility differently: one maximizing the footprint as a single large classroom with room for gear drills and storage; one splitting the suite into two classrooms; and one leaving existing storage and conference space untouched, converting only the remaining rooms into a classroom. Working together, WaNIC and SV selected the large-classroom option and then refined it further, trading the gear-drill area for six additional desks and repositioning an existing sink to serve the new layout, preserving useful infrastructure at no added cost.
