As a tenant of Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWIT), Washington Network for Innovative Careers’ (WaNIC’s) teaching staff faced two problems in the dental classroom: no clear way to gather the class for a demonstration, and no sightline to the entry, so students could come and go unnoticed, a safety concern given WaNIC serves high schoolers. SV removed two unused dental chairs, equipment, sinks, and surrounding partial walls, opening a demonstration space around one remaining chair the teacher can use to teach the whole class. Lowering nearby partial walls further improved sightlines, while a new camera at the entry, feeding a monitor visible throughout the room, gives the teacher constant awareness of who enters or leaves. The redesign also freed space up for better storage and more student cubbies.
